The Poppy: A Symbol of Remembrance and Hope
The poppy has long been a powerful symbol of remembrance for those who have served and sacrificed in military conflicts. Its significance is deeply tied to World War I and the iconic poem, In Flanders Fields, written by Lt. Col. John McCrae. (See comments for poem!!) The vibrant red poppies blooming on the battlefields of Flanders became a poignant reminder of the lives lost in the pursuit of freedom.
In 1922, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) adopted the poppy as its official memorial flower, launching the "Buddy Poppy" program. These small, handcrafted flowers are made by disabled, hospitalized, and aging veterans, providing them with a source of income while symbolizing unity and remembrance.
Proceeds from the sale of Buddy Poppies directly support programs for veterans, including assistance with housing, medical care, and rehabilitation. The poppy is more than just a flower—it is a pledge to honor the sacrifices of service members and a commitment to support those who continue to bear the costs of war.
The VFW invites you to wear a poppy proudly and reflect on its meaning. It is a simple yet profound way to show gratitude for those who have served and to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten. By supporting the Buddy Poppy program, you help uphold the mission of the VFW: "To honor the dead by helping the living."
You can contribute to this vital cause by donating to the Buddy Poppy program or volunteering with the VFW. If you’re interested in becoming a member of the VFW or its Auxiliary, we welcome you to meet with us before our meetings to apply. Membership benefits include access to a strong community of veterans, support programs, and the opportunity to give back to those who served.
We also welcome the community to join us for Bingo every Monday and Tuesday at the VFW. Doors open at 4:00 PM, with Early Birds starting at 6:15 PM. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved minors over the age of 10 accompanied by adults. Come and enjoy a fun evening while supporting a great cause!
